A Look Back at 2009
2009 was an incredibly busy year.

Below are the many amazing projects our staff and volunteers accomplished in 2009:

MLK Day of Service 2009
Woodland Park Boys & Girls Club

  • January 19, 2009
  • 105 volunteers served 420 hours

Spring Saturday Academy

  • Mountain View Community Center
  • February 28-April 25 2009
  • 14 volunteers served 309.5 hours
Volunteers met every Saturday with children from a low-income neighborhood to do science projects, character-building activities, and sports.

Phone book delivery fundraiser

  • May 2009
  • Anchorage, AK
  • 97 volunteers served 1078.5 hours
HOPE worldwide volunteers delivered phone books to the local community in order to raise funds for Alaska programs.

Boys & Girls Club Renovation

  • Metlakatla, AK
  • June 15-20, 2009
  • 7 volunteers served 355 hours
Volunteers traveled to the island community of Metlakatla in Southeast Alaska to renovate and repair the local Boys & Girls Club community center.

Boys & Girls Club Renovation: Tok #1

  • Tok, AK
  • July 9-15, 2009
  • 11 volunteers served 600 hours
Volunteers traveled to Tok, Alaska to renovate and repair the local Boys & Girls Club community center. This was the first of two trips to the community.

Boys & Girls Club Renovation: Tok #2

  • July 31-August 3, 2009
  • Tok, AK
  • 15 volunteers served 458 hours
Volunteers traveled to Tok, Alaska to renovate and repair the local Boys & Girls Club community center. This was the second of two trips to the community.

Auction fundraiser with Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Alaska

  • Sheraton Hotel, Anchorage AK
  • September 19, 2009
  • 10 volunteers
HOPE worldwide volunteers partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs to do an auction/dinner fundraiser. Special guests at the event were Mack and Zoe strong from the Washington Chapter. There were several local dignitaries at the event including Senator Lisa Murkowski, a city lawmaker, and a number of the most successful businesspeople in the area. The event brought in $10,000 to the Alaska Chapter.

After school program at Alaska Native Cultural Charter School

  • September-November 2009
  • Alaska Native Cultural Charter School
  • 30 volunteers served 111 hours
HOPE worldwide is running a before- and after-school program for students in grades K-6 at the Alaska Native Cultural Charter School. Volunteers are a huge help, as there are 60+ kids every day and only 3-4 HOPE and School District staff. This month we received help from University of Alaska Anchorage students during a campus volunteer week.

Alaska Saturday Academy

  • 9 volunteers served 88.5 hours
Volunteers met every Saturday with children from a low-income neighborhood to do science projects, character-building activities, and sports.

After school program

  • Alaska Native Cultural Charter School
  • December 2009
  • 4 volunteers served 8 hours
HOPE worldwide is running a before- and after-school program for students in grades K-6 at the Alaska Native Cultural Charter School. Volunteers are a huge help, as there are 60+ kids every day and only 3-4 HOPE and School District staff.

Christmas Party for homeless teens with Covenant House Alaska

  • Anchorage, AK
  • December 15, 2009
  • 12 volunteers served 27 hours
Volunteers partnered with the Covenant House Transitional Living Program. Teens in transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency celebrated Christmas with sledding, a chili dinner, and a “white elephant” gift exchange with the volunteers. About ten teens were served.

Food and toy drive in partnership with Lutheran Social Services, Food Bank of Alaska and Salvation Army

  • Anchorage, AK
  • December 22, 2009
  • 22 volunteers served 90.5 hours

Volunteers partnered with other local organizations to distribute food and toys for Christmas to families in need. Debbie Swallow helped oversee the event. In her words, “I know that there were a lot of people working hard, and with a big smile on their faces. The clients were very grateful and appreciative. Even after we finished the second shift there were 2 people who went over to Clark Middle School to finish helping out there. We all had a great time!”
